Giving a child an education is by far one of the greatest investments we can make
Education is the key to opportunity
and the ticket out of poverty
THE
FACTS
THE FUNDS NEEDED
Although primary level education is mandatory in Uganda, many schools struggle with lack of funds and poorly maintained buildings, overwhelmed by the rapid population increase as people have fled conflict and population where 70% are below the age of 25 (the second youngest population in the world).
WITH YOUR HELP
We have built 2 primary schools for 1,400 very poor children, including 150 Orphans and Vulnerable Children who with your support we care for financially and emotionally. Our primary school is ranked in the top 7 (out of 280) in Mbale District and unlike many has clean water allowing pupils use of 14 toilets, 10 showers, and 7 drinking water fountains.
BUILDING TO PROVIDE EDUCATION
In 2023, we will begin construction on a new Secondary School in Namatala, Mbale, which is the second biggest slum in Uganda. This will provide education for 1,250 secondary school students who would otherwise not attend secondary school and will house our first IT Centre to provide computer skills for both child and adult learning. The project also includes a deep borehole able to provide clean water for all children and the surrounding community.
GROUND-BREAKING PROJECTS
Only one-third of Ugandans are able to go to secondary school, and so this facility is desperately needed in Namatala. At a “Ground-Breaking Ceremony” in 2022, over 2,000 community members came to show their tremendous support for this project.

Riverside School
Namatala, Mbale, Eastern Uganda
Currently, 70% of children in Uganda do not continue through to secondary education, with poor access to schools and high fees prohibiting many from further education.
Spotlight on Africa, PEAS, the Nick Maughan Foundation and CAUKIN Studio have developed the design of the NMF Riverside School, which is currently under construction. The 7 acre site is located to the West of Mbale and borders the Manafwa River.
This project will create a secondary school campus large enough to educate up to 1,250 students and will be split across 3 phases which include multiple building functions and typologies.
Musoto IT Centre
Spotlight on Africa and CAUKIN Studio have developed the design of the Nick Maughan Advanced Information Technology Centre, aimed at providing state of the art digital skills education to the Musoto community. The facility is currently in construction.
The IT school will provide dedicated teaching spaces for IT learning as well as supporting a digital fabrication lab containing 3D printers and graphics tablets. The bespoke facility has been strategically designed to prioritise security whilst allowing for passively cooled, inspiring spaces which contain all of the digital equipment required to teach an integrated IT curriculum.
The design utilises local materials in innovative ways to help to reduce the building’s embodied carbon and energy consumption during its usable lifetime. A focus is placed on keeping the equipment secure within the walled courtyard whilst also providing a safe space for outdoor teaching, projection screenings and daytime studying outside of the classroom.
